Spring Roundup 4/25-29

By Neil H. Devlin, Mullen Sports Information Director
Mustangs heading into the final days of the regular season for 2023; girls tennis in position for a 4A team championship.

Mullen girls tennis is halfway home to another team championship.

The past week, the Mustangs rolled past Thomas Jefferson 7-0 and handled Discovery Canyon 6-1 through the first two rounds of the Class 4A team tournament, now in its second season

Head coach Jera Sturgell said her team remains confident heading into Tuesday’s semifinals at home against Thompson Valley.

“I actually felt really good about this season,” she said in recalling its outset. “We had strong tryouts, girls were moving up and they looked good.”

Mullen moved to 12-4 in dual meets and hasn’t lost a set through 14 lines of play. Sturgell points out that the Mustangs are strong throughout their lineup and they lost only 12 games in the TJ match, just three among their singles players Lexi Yost, Lilly Evans and Savanna Hanley. They also dropped only three games against Discovery Canyon

The other 4A semifinal will be Cheyenne Mountain vs. Kent Denver.

Mullen also will host a 4A Region on Wednesday, the tickets to the individual bracket that will be contested in Pueblo.

The Mustangs won the Colorado title in 2021, the year before officials added a team bracket to the postseason that wasn’t based on or associated with individual play.
